What Are Nightmares ?

  • Nightmares are usually during REM sleep.
  • They lead into anxiety, stress or strong terror.
  • This occurs in the later part of the night and usually awakens the sleeper.

SYMPTOMS OF NIGHTMARES

  • The victim may constantly wake up recollecting long, scary dreams.
  • They can result in distress and social disorientation.
  • Eating just before bed increases the risk of having a nightmare.

WHAT CAUSES NIGHTMARES ?

  • Nightmares can be a result of the use of narcotics or any type of illegal drug that causes hallucinations.
  • It can also be a result of certain medications such as blood pressure pills.
  • Other sleep disorders can cause nightmares as well.

EFFECTS/ DANGERS OF NIGHTMARES

  • Nightmares can lead to fears of going back to sleep or depression.
  • They can also lead to violence or mistaken drug use.

TREATMENTS

  • There aren't many treatments. Most of the treatments are more verbal.
  • One treatment that helps with nightmares, sleep disturbances and any other PTSD symptoms is prazosin.
