HISTORY OF ELEMENT

  • Discovered by Charles Hatchett in 1801
  • Used by English people for light bulbs
  • Used by Niobe, a Greek princess for jewelry
  • Symbol started out as Cb than moved to Nb
  • Symbol came to be from Greek mythology princess named Niobe daughter of Tantalus.

PROPERTIES OF ELEMEMT

  • Boiling point 5017
  • Melting point 2750
  • Ductile
  • Grey and metallic
  • Reactive with sodium and fluorine

EXPLANATION OF PROPERTIES

  • It's boiling point is how hot it will get.
  • It's melting point is how low it has to get to melt.
  • Ductile means it is able to be stretched.
  • Grey and metallic means the color that it is and the feel of it.
  • And reactive with Sodium and Fluorine means it is reactive and with these two elements.

USE OF NIOBIUM #1

  • Jewelry
  • It is used in specific types of jewelry like earrings and necklaces.

USE OF NIOBIUM #2

  • Used in pipeline construction
  • Niobium increases the toughness, strength, and formability of the pipe.

  • They use it in arc-welding.
  • It has a high dialect constant and is able to hold and store electrical charges.

  • Used in tattooing or body art.
  • Because this element has a bluish color it is used in body art.

  • Lastly is is used for medical purposes.
  • Because of it's alloys being solid it is used in medicine for hypoallergenic medications.

SOURCES OF NIOBIUM

  • Areas where it is found in the U.S. is Massachusetts.
  • Other countries it is found in are Brazil, Canada, Nigeria, Australia, and central Africa.

  • It is mostly mined it Brazil and when they do it they copper filter it.
  • The cost of it is 18 dollars per 100 grams that you get.
  • The state that it was found in was Massachusetts in the United States.
  • Niobium is pure and is not an ore.

OTHER INTERESTING INFO

  • Niobium was first called Columbium with a symbol of Cb.
  • Back then it was used for lamp filaments by the people of England.
  • The man who sent the information to England was John Winthrop a governor in the U.S.
  • Niobium's shell arrangement is a weird one and it is 2,8,18,12,1.
  • Some of niobium is also used for optical reasons to make lenses for glasses.
