NITROGEN CYCLE

DEFINITION

  • the series of processes by which nitrogen and its compounds are interconverted in the environment and in living organisms, including nitrogen fixation and decomposition.

Untitled Slide

  • A type of bacteria called nitrogen fixing bacteria in roots and nodules converts nitrogen gas to nitrate compounds. The bacteria takes in atmospheric nitrogen and produces ammonia.
  • Other bacteria use the ammonia to produce nitrites and nitrates, which are nitrogen and oxygen containing compounds
  • Plants use the nitrates and nitrites to make amino acids which are used to make plant proteins.

  • 4. Plants are consumed by other organisms. They use the plant amino acid to make their own.
  • 5. Decomposers convert nitrogen found in other organisms into ammonia and it returns to the soil. A few types of bacteria return nitrogen back into the atmosphere by the process of denitrification.
