the series of processes by which nitrogen and its compounds are interconverted in the environment and in living organisms, including nitrogen fixation and decomposition.
A type of bacteria called nitrogen fixing bacteria in roots and nodules converts nitrogen gas to nitrate compounds. The bacteria takes in atmospheric nitrogen and produces ammonia.
Other bacteria use the ammonia to produce nitrites and nitrates, which are nitrogen and oxygen containing compounds
Plants use the nitrates and nitrites to make amino acids which are used to make plant proteins.
4. Plants are consumed by other organisms. They use the plant amino acid to make their own.
5. Decomposers convert nitrogen found in other organisms into ammonia and it returns to the soil. A few types of bacteria return nitrogen back into the atmosphere by the process of denitrification.
