President Nixon (1969-1974)

  • Imperial Presidency - expands powers of Executive Branch
  • All the President's Men - Nixon surrounds himself with small group of very loyal advisors - desire secrecy
Inner Circle:
HR Halderman = Chief of Staff spent 18 months in prison for cover up
John Ehrlichman = Chief Domestic Advisor spent 18 months in prison for cover up
John Mitchell = Attorney General spent 19 months in prison for cover up

The Watergate Break-in

  • Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP) break into Democratic HQ at Watergate Hotel
  • Becomes a scandal with Nixon administration cover-up
  • Destroy documents; obstruct investigation; bribe "burglers"
Burgler Leader James McCord was advised to lie under oath about who encouraged them to break-in
Nixon fires White House counsel John Dean who went on to implicate Nixon knew of cover up - also comes out that Nixon taped White House conversations

The Cover-Up Exposed

  • Reporters Woodward & Bernstein publish links/connections to the White House
  • White House denies involvement
  • Nixon wins Re-election easily

The Cover-Up Unravels

  • Congress appoints Special Prosecutor to investigate - subpeonas tapes of Nixon's Oval Office conversations
  • Nixon refuses and begins firing those standing in his way
  • On a separate note: VP Spiro Agnew resigns - took bribes as Gov. of Maryland (Ford becomes new VP)
The series of firings from Archibald Cox to the resignation of attorney general Elliot Richardson to the firing of Richardson's deputy who also called for tapes

Nixon Resigns

  • Nixon finally releases tapes - 18 minutes missing? erased?
  • Many Nixon aides being indicted for conspiracy, perjury, obstruction of justice
  • Nixon resigns before facing impeachment
Nixon's secretary claims she accidentally erased the 18 minutes

President Ford (1974-77)

  • Issues Pardon to Nixon
  • Inflation & Unemployment rise
  • OPEC (Oil & Petroleum Exporting Countries) reduces oil supplies - demand increase means Energy Crisis
  • Ford's Plan: Whip Inflation Now (WIN) fails - loses 1976 Election to Carter
Ford was a college football player for the Michigan Wolverines. Was known for being a klutz. Once stumbled coming off the steps of Air Force One.

President Carter

  • Common Man Appeal
  • Economic Problems linger = Time of Malaise
  • Stagflation: High Inflation (18%) + High Unemployment (8%)
Peanut Farmer and Governor of Georgia - was not viewed as a Washington insider like predecessors.

President Carter

  • Success: Camp David Accords = Israel/Egypt peace settlement
  • Failures: SALT II - fails to get Senate approval; Iran takes 52 Embassy officials hostage for 444 days; boycotts 1980 Olympics in Moscow
  • Loses 1980 Election to Ronald Reagan
Carter eventually wins the Nobel Peace Prize, primarily for his humanitarian and philanthropic work with Habitat for Humanity.
Hostages are release the day of Reagan's inauguration... (foreshadowing)
