Vietnamization

  • A new strategy aimed to move military forces out of Vietnam by transferring the responsibility to S. Vietnam.
  • Nixon was trying to restore the unity of the divided American society.
  • the plan involved building up the strength of the S. Vietnam army in order to gradually remove troops.

DETENTE

  • A period of time when Nixonmade an effort to ease tension between the USSR and the US.
  • Nixon became the first US president to travel to Moscow.
  • Both countries sought to increase trade and reduce military tension.

SALT I

  • The first series of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks.
  • Lasted from Nov. 1969 to May 1972.
  • USA & USSR negotiated first agreement to place limits and restraints of weapons.
  • In return US would transport grain to the Soviet people.

NIXON TO CHINA

  • On Feb. 21, 1972, Nixon visited China to improve relations with Communist China.
  • He met with leader Zhou Enlai to expand cultural contacts.
  • The two agreed to strengthen the Open Door Trading Policy that allows free trade to the Chinese.

WATERGATE

  • In 1972, there was a robbery at the Watergate building in DC.
  • Some of them were affiliated with Nixon's reelection team.
  • They were caught wire tapping and stealing confidential documents.
  • Nixon tried to cover up the incident afterwards which led to his resignation.
  • Ford granted a full pardon to Nixon which rattled the American society.
