NORMAN INVASION

  • Began on 28 September 1066 with the invasion of England by William the Conqueror.
  • Started with his victory at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066 over King Harold II of England
  • By 1071, William had secured control of most of England, rebellions and resistance continued until 1088
  • Removed most of the native ruling class. Moved into an era known as Norman England

THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS

  • The battle of Hastings took place on October 14, 1066
  • This battle was fought over a dispute of power between King Harold of England and William of Normandy
  • Harold was given the thrown after the pass of Edaward, but William said that the thrown was promised to him
  • William prepared an invasion fleet, armed with a Papal bull declaring his right to the thrown
  • The Normans ended up winning the battle, and Harold was shot in the eye by an arrow and killed, after this battle the Normans rightfully controlled England

THE MAGNA CARTA

  • June 15,1215 at Runnymede near Windsor Castle
  • Attempt to stop Kings from abusing power
  • No taxation without representation, allowed for fair and non excessive punishment, and trial by jury
  • Avoid civil war
  • Written by 13th century barons to protect rights and property
