SOCIAL ORGANIZATION

  • The norse had a rigid social order separated into two groups, the serfs and frees.
  • The serfs endured miserable lives as pretty much slaves. The serfs shared tiny huts that the serfs built out of timber, sod, and clay. Also, the serfs had to do the work or bidding for the frees.
  • The frees were separated into tiers with the warriors, earls, and kings in the upper tier. Most Norse people were peasants who had jobs as a farmer or a freeman who chose his job which usually meant farmer, artisan, or craftsmen.
  • The earls and warriors were the wealthiest and were known under the upper class who had lots of power and money.
  • The earls and warriors respect was counted in ships, treasures, followers, and estates. And when the warrior or earl died his stuff would be passed down to his eldest son. During the winter, they would live in their estates, repair their items so for the spring they could set out on voyaged.

SOCIAL ORGANIZATION

  • The norse used runes as their alphabet and would write on surfaces like wood or stone. This carving was a long process so they didn't keep it on record keeping.
  • Instead of writing, poetry was used to tell the events of the Norse. These poems were written by skalds. Skalds would recite their poems to kings or the rich of many different countries.

  • All Norse men were required to carry weapons with permits.
  • They would sometimes use hunting bows in battle.

  • In futhark the letter c and q aren't used
  • Two common diagraphs TH and NG are used through only one letter
  • When using futhark C makes the same sound as K, the same goes for J it makes the same sound as Y

RELIGION

  • Religious belief of settlers can be divided into two categories; that is pagan and belief of supernatural forces
  • Freyr was the male god of fertility
  • Loki the crafty played many nasty tricks on the gods, he is responsible for baldurs death
  • Odin was the god of poetry, sorcery and rune craft, and the god of death and war
  • Thor was the son of Odin and Jord, his symbol was the hammer

ECONOMIC SYSTEMS

  • The fundamental economy was agriculture that included agriculture, fishing, and sea trade.
  • They mainly lived by the sea where they could farm, fish, and trade.
  • Slavery performed an important role in economy as well as agriculture, such as livestock.
  • Wheat wasn't grow successfully because of the soil north of southern Norway.
  • Their greatest achievements were shipbuilding and navigation.

  • The viking age was when vikings sailed to the British Isles and east Russia, colonizing the land as they went and the warriors who sailed, raiding and destroying monastries, villages, and settlements as they progressed.
