The norse had a rigid social order separated into two groups, the serfs and frees.
The serfs endured miserable lives as pretty much slaves. The serfs shared tiny huts that the serfs built out of timber, sod, and clay. Also, the serfs had to do the work or bidding for the frees.
The frees were separated into tiers with the warriors, earls, and kings in the upper tier. Most Norse people were peasants who had jobs as a farmer or a freeman who chose his job which usually meant farmer, artisan, or craftsmen.
The earls and warriors were the wealthiest and were known under the upper class who had lots of power and money.
The earls and warriors respect was counted in ships, treasures, followers, and estates. And when the warrior or earl died his stuff would be passed down to his eldest son. During the winter, they would live in their estates, repair their items so for the spring they could set out on voyaged.
The norse used runes as their alphabet and would write on surfaces like wood or stone. This carving was a long process so they didn't keep it on record keeping.
Instead of writing, poetry was used to tell the events of the Norse. These poems were written by skalds. Skalds would recite their poems to kings or the rich of many different countries.
The viking age was when vikings sailed to the British Isles and east Russia, colonizing the land as they went and the warriors who sailed, raiding and destroying monastries, villages, and settlements as they progressed.
