DOGWOOD BLOSSOM: STATE FLOWER
The blossom of the dogwood tree is also known as the Cornus florida.
Dogwood blossoms appear early in spring. Most of the flowers are white when they bloom, but shades
of pink and red are not unusual.

The Plott Hound was officially adopted as the NC state dog.
The Plott Hound is the only officially recognized breed of dog in NC.

EASTERN TIGER SWALLOWTAIL: STATE BUTTERFLY
The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly is also known as the Papilio glaucus.
The bill approving this butterfly as the state butterfly was passed on June 15, 2012.

PINE BARREN TREE FROG: STATE FROG
June 26, 2013 the Pine Barren Tree Frog became the official state frog of NC.
The Pine Barren Tree Frog can be found in the Sandhills of NC, and the Coastal Plain regions of NC.
It is considered rare to fine one of these guys.

FOX GRAPE: STATE FRUIT
The Fox Grape is also known as the Scuppernong Grape.
The fruit was named from the Scuppernong River, which runs quite a long ways!

VENUS FLYTRAP: STATE PLANT
The Venus Flytrap is also known as the Dionaea muscipula.
The Venus Flytraps's spring can close in less than one second!

MEGALODON SHARK TOOTH: STATE FOSSIL
The Megalodon had serrated teeth, that probably grew to be about seven inches in length.
Someplaces in NC, scientist found and dug up Megalodon teeth.

EASTERN BOX TURTLE: STATE REPTILE
The Eastern Box Turtle is also know as the Terrapene carolina.
It is designated as the family of turtles, representing the turtles living in NC.

GOLD: STATE MINERAL
Only two other states have gold as their mineral. (Alaska, and California.)
A twelve year old boy found the first peice of gold in 1799.
