NORTH ECONOMY

  • Southerners are afraid of the northes power

  • Congress funded a project to put a road across the Appalachian mountain
  • Builders made steam engine boats
  • Going up stream was hard
  • Made steam locomotives
  • First all water link from central plains to east coast

  • Mostly into technology
  • Not as much racism
  • The climate was really cold or really hot

SOUTH ECONOMY

  • The economy was based on agriculture
  • They grew cash crops such as tobacco, rice, sugarcane, and indigo
  • Cotton was a promising crop
  • Eli Whitney crested the "cotton engine" called the cotton gin

SOUTH TRANSPORTATION

  • Cotton was transported by steam-powered riverboats
  • The South opposed bills for federal funds to build roads or canals because they had little need
  • River travel was the Souths main form of transportation
  • They also had some railroads which they were proud of

SOUTH SOCIETY

  • Wealthy plantation owners dominated the economy and politics of the South
  • Most white families owned some land but only one in four owned one slave
  • They rented rugged mountain or forest land and paid rent with the crops they raised
  • A small minority of African Americans in the South were free blacks
