MAJOR BATTLES

FORT SUMTER

  • Island located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina
  • Site of the first shots of The Civil War
  • Union attacked the confederates, saying that was their property
  • Union lost, confederates won

BATTLE OF THE BULL RUN

  • First major land battle
  • Occurred July 16,1861 in Virginia
  • 18,000 men total
  • 3,000 confederates killed
  • Only 1,750 union killed, victory over south.

SOLDIER

360,000 Yankee soldiers dies 110,000 in battle, 225,000 of disease. The south lost about 258,000 men total. 94,000 in battle and 164,000 to disease. Roughly 211,000 union soldiers were captured and about 30000 died wile captured. 214,000 confederates were captured and 26000 of them died while imprisoned. Soldiers on each side initially earned about 11 dollars per month. In June 1864 the confederacy raised raised each soldiers pay to 18 per month. The same month the union raised their price to 16 a month. After June 1864 the black soldier got the same pay as a white so,died, but black soldiers that joined who were slaves did not get the same raise because they had just joined the army. African Americans made up roughly 10 percent of the union army. Approximately 179,000 black soldiers wore blue 37,000 lost their lives. In march 1865 the confederate congress authorized the army recruit 300,000 black troops. Southern soldier satire was completely different from the north. The south wore short waisted jacket and trousers made of Jean cloth. Dyed by different methods the uniforms were a variation of greys and browns. Union uniforms were universally better. The union soldiers blouse and trousers were wool and dyes a dark blue until 1862 when the trouser colored was altered into a lighter shade of blue.

THE AVERAGE SOLDIER

  • About 2.75 million soldiers fought
  • 2 million for north 750,000 for south
  • Average Confederate soldier was white, native born, farmer, Protestant, single, between 18 and 29 .
  • Stood about 5 foot 8 and weighed I about 143 pounds.
  • Average union soldier were between the ages of 18 and 39 .

  • Careers for union soldiers included accountant, surveyor, locksmith and teacher
  • In the union army 80 percent were infantry, 14 Calvary, 6 artillery
  • Confederate consisted of 75 infantry, 20 Calvary, 5 artillery.
  • Of every 1000 Feds, 112 were wounded, and 150 were hit
  • A yank stood a 1 in 8 chance of dying to disease

GOVERNMENT

  • North and Ali became increasingly concerned due to abolitionist acts
  • South was concerned the north would find away to end silvery
  • South was not happy about that because they felt threatened
  • South declared war on the north.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

  • South only had to fight a defensive war
  • North had a huge population so they had way more soldiers than the south
  • North had a better economical system so they could afford more resources
  • The south had control of cotton so they could make allies with other countries
  • North had control of the navy

  • Speech famously known given by President Abraham Lincoln, although Edward Evertt spoke the majority of the time
