Northwest Indians lived from Alaska to Northern California
The region where they lived is bordered by mountains and the ocean
The coastline has thousands of islands and bays
Thick forests cover much of the land

A potlatch was a large feast that could last for several days
Families held potlatches to celebrate important events
Some important events that they celebrated were a building of a house or a marriage
Families tried to give the largest and most expensive potlatch to show their wealth

NORTHWEST FOOD
Salmon was an important resource to the northwest Indians
The northwest Indians ate whales and seals
They hunted geese,deers,elks and bears
They also gathered seasonal berries in the forest

Northwest Indians had to make clothing out of the resources they had

The Indians used the inner part of the cedar bark so their clothing would be soft and warm

Chinook Indians are the people of the Pacific Northwest
Chinook Indians made their living by trading,fishing,and by gathering berries
Most of the chinook Indians live in Oregon and Washington
The chinook belongs to a larger group of Indians called chinookans
The chinooks became known for their skill in dealing with explorers and settlers

MAKAH INDIANS
Makah Indians are the people of the Pacific Northwest and the state of Washington
Makah means generous ones in the language of neighboring groups
In the past, Makah people lived in several large villages along the pacific coast and farther islands
They used cedar planks to build flat roof houses up to 60 feet
The Makah Indians hunted,fished and gathered berries and roots from wild plants

TLINGIT
The Tlingit were one of the largest Indian groups in the Pacific Northwest
The Tlingit build their villages near the coast or rivers
The Tlingit passed time by carving, painting, weaving and sewing
Tlingit people gathered around a fire in the center of the house to sit and talk
The Tlingit divided themselves into clans. A clan is a group of related families

CLANS
The Tlingit had strict rules about how clans should treat one another
A clan is a group of related families
They put dividers in the houses so that each family has its own area
Clans gathered around a fire in the center of the house to cook and talk

CLIMATE
In the summer it was very hot
In the winter it was very cold
In the summer it was hot so most of the time they would not wear clothing
In spring and fall the weather was mild
