Hall’s sexual ambivalence soon confounded his/her neighbors. Sometimes Hall appeared in men’s clothing, sometimes in women’s. Hall’s enactment of both masculinity and femininity—through sartorial choices and intimate encounters---baffled the members of his/her community. Hall’s acquaintances relied on cultural definitions of gender to argue that Hall was a man, a woman, or “both sexes in one.”
