Nursing Education Simulations

Chelsey Moore

What are simulations?

  • Simulations are replications of real life hospital scenarios. They use mannequins as the patients, and the student nurses are able to act out what actions are needed in the scenarios indepen.

Advantages of simulations

  • No threat to patient saftey
  • Active learning can occur
  • Errors can be detected and discussed immediately
  • Interactive critical thinking

Disadvantages of Simulations

  • High costs for schools
  • Need for evidence based practice to see if simulations are actually beneficial

Three Points I got from my article

  • The main advantage of the simulations is catching errors and correcting them right way. You can also learn from your fellow student's mistakes.
  • Current uses of simulation technology have shown that it offers an excellent approach for developing interactive critical thinking.
  • Debriefings on the upcoming scenarios need to be done by an experienced faculty member

Simulation Mobile Applications

  • ECG Simulator: Simulations of different EKG strips. I can use this to help me in identifying EKG changes in my patients.
  • Resuscitation: Simulations of code situations. I can use this to help me understand cases and what roles to play.

Haiku Deck Editor

  • Presentation software that allows you to add different effects to your presentation

Advantages of Haiku

  • Easy to use
  • A lot of themes to choose from

Disadvantages

  • Having to get used to a different software
