  • Mild climate; summer high temperatures are usually in the upper 80s (31˚C) and winters are in the low 80s (28˚C)

  • Covering 10,932 square miles, Hawaii is the 43rd largest state in the United States
  • With a population number of 1,404,054 (as of 2013), Hawaii is the 40th most populous state in the U.S
  • Major industries of Hawaii include tourism, agriculture (bananas, pineapples, macadamia nuts, taro)

HAWAIIAN CULTURAL HISTORY

  • First settled by Polynesians sailing from other Pacific islands between A.D. 300 and 600
  • Hawaii was visited in 1778 by British captain James Cook, who called the group the Sandwich Islands
  • Annexed in 1898, and later became a U.S territory in 1900; entered U.S union as 50th state in 1959
