What is Ocean Circulation?

  • Ocean Circulation is the large scale movement of waters
  • In the ocean basins. Winds drive surface circulation , and the
  • cooling and sinking of waters in the polar regions drive deep circulation.

How does it affect the environment?

  • Wind speed, direction&gusts
  • Nutrient, sediment, concentration of chemicals in environments
  • Surface currents near the equator is heated by the sun and makes it warm
  • Trade winds and rotation of the earth makes water flow

Two types of surface currents

Cold Currents & Warm Currents

Cold Currents

  • west coast
  • toward the equator
  • cool water to tropical regions

Warm Currents

  • east coasts
  • away from the equator
  • tropical air north
