What is Sonar Used for?

  • Measures the Depth of the Sea Floor
  • Used to find sunken ships and aircraft
  • Depth measurements are used to create rainbow colored maps detailing the seafloor

  • Low cost
  • Effectively provide distance of objects under the surface
  • Produces a large amount of data

  • Poorer discriminatory ability than vision
  • Susceptible to distortion
  • Can produce errors
  • SEVERELY disrupts the ecolocation of marine mammals
