Hextremely ancient animals that evolved into reef-building forms over the last 25 million years. Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse regions on Earth. Only tropical rainforests might provide homes for more species of plant and animal life. Even though they cover only a tiny fraction (less than .2 percent) of the ocean's bottom, coral reefs contain more than 25 percent of all marine life.

CORAL REEF...

  • two main types of coral vvv
  • hard coral, the major reef-building species; and soft coral, such as sea whips.
  • Organisms who dwell here vvv
  • fish, turtles, sharks, eels, crabs, shrimps, urchins, sponges, and algae.
  • Fun Fact: Coral Reefs are known as “rainforests of the sea”

CORAL REEF LIMITING FACTORS

  • Pollution
  • Disease
  • Over fishing
  • Sedimentation
  • Bleaching caused by rising ocean temperatures

SALTMARSH & ESTUARIES

  • Unique ecosystems in semi-sheltered areas near the ocean coastline.
  • serve as nursing grounds where young marine life is protected during growing
  • Fun Fact: Salt Marshes are know as vvv
  • One of the most productive natural ecosystems on earth

SALTMARSH & ESTUARIES DESCRIPTION

  • Contains pannes and pools
  • Upland border
  • High Marsh & Low Marsh

SALTMARSH & ESTUARY ORGANISMS

  • A variety of birds
  • Invertebrates
  • Mammals
  • Reptiles
  • And Fish

SALTMARSH LIMITING FACTORS

  • Droughting
  • Day length change
  • Climate

WHALE FALL

  • Carcass that has fallen into the Bathyal or Abyssal zone on the ocean floor.
  • Found at depths of 2,000 m or 6,600 ft
  • create localized ecosystems that supply sustenance to deep-sea organisms for decades.
  • Fun Fact: its body may float away and wash up onshore somewhere.
  • But other times, the carcass falls to the seafloor

WHALE FALL ORGANISMS

  • Giant Isopods
  • Squat lobsters
  • Bristle worms
  • Sea cucumbers
  • And Shrimp

WHALE FALL LIMITING FACTORS

  • Some aspect of the environment that limits an organism’s distribution.
  • temperature, salinity, nutrients, & light
  • competition, predation, & herbivory
