OEDIPUS

BIRTH

• Oedipus was the child of Laius and Jocasta, the rulers of Thebes.
• Eager for future knowledge, Laius went to a fortune teller and came upon unwelcome news.
• Oedipus was destined to murder his father and marry his mother.
• Appalled, the parents of the newborn gave him to a herdsmen to have him killed.
• A spike was driven through baby Oedipus' ankles. He was left to die.

OEDIPUS SURVIVED

• He was rescued by a peasant, who's master adopted Oedipus.
• Due to the master and his wife's inability to conceive.

THE TRUTH COMES OUT

• On a drunken public feast night Oedipus discovers the truth.
• A drunk man shouts to him, that he had no Idea who his biological father was
• Furious, Oedipus sent off to the fortune teller to discover the names of his real parents.

FORTUNE TELLER

• The fortune teller was unable to tell who his parents were.
• She did tell him of the prophecy he was due to fulfill.
• Disgusted, Oedipus headed to his real home town, Thebes.

UNFORTUNATE ENCOUNTER

• On his way back home, he came across a carriage heading the opposite direction
• The driver struck Oedipus to move out of the way.
• Enraged, he fought, and killed the driver and his passenger, king Laius.
• Not knowing he had Fulfilled half of the proficy.

LIFE CHANGING RIDDLE

• The village of Thebes finding that their king had been murdered was in sorrow
• Sphinx made a riddle only someone worthy of being king could solve.
• So Oedipus, being his smart self solved the riddle, becoming king of Thebes.
• Becoming king, he got to marry the ex-widow, his mother.

THE PROPHECY

• Oedipus, married his mother and had children with her.
• He did not know that the man he had murdered had been his father.
• He also was unaware the his wife, and mother if his children was also his mother

LIFE CHANGING SCAR

• Jocasta, Oedipus' mother and wife, soon found out who her husband was
• Her son.
