JOHN STEINBECK
- Born in Salinas, CA in 1902
- Grew up in fertile agricultural valley
- Attended Stanford University in 1919
- Left in 1925 without a degree
- Won a Nobel Prize in 1962 and died in 1968
SALINAS RIVER
- Originally named Rio Monte Rey (the Mountain King River) in 1776
- Primary water source for the Salinas valley farms and vineyards
- Shallow river with most of its water flow running underground
- Largest river on California's Central Coast-170 miles long
- "Runs deep and green" (Steinbeck 1).
GABILAN MOUNTAINS
- In the Southern Inner California Coast Ranges System in central CA
- Bordered on the west by the Salinas valley
- Fremont Peak, at 3,455 feet in elevation, is the range's highest point
- "The golden foothill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky
- Gabilan mountains" (Steinbeck 1).
SALINAS VALLEY
- Located in the Central Coast Region of California
- One of the most productive agricultural regions in the world
- "the Salad Bowl of the World"
- Home to thousands of acres of produce and flower farms
- "The valley side is lined with trees-willows fresh and green" (Steinbeck 1).
