WHERE DOES OIL COME FROM

  • Crude oil is found in the Earth's surface. It's been there for millions of years.
  • Oil forms from dead animals. That matter gets buried between rock and soil. Over time the heat and pressure created by the Earths layers turns the matter into petroleum oil. Oil fields is where you find oil. An oil rig is used to get the oil from the ground. Some of the oil fields are found between the BC and Alberta border.
  • After crude is pumped from the ground it is sent to a refinery. At the refinery they turn the crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and heating oil.

WHAT OIL IS USED FOR

  • Oil is an amazing resource because it can be used for so many different things like: Gas, diesel, jet fuel, medicine, paint, make up, cooking, pens, plastic bottles and clothing.

How long people have been making use of oil.

In 1853 people used oil to grease their wagon wheels
and tools.
Benjamin Stillman discovered that crude oil can be useable. Four years later people started drilling it because it was such a valuable resource. It could be used for many things.

WHO ARE SOME OF THE CUSTOMERS WHO BUY OIL

  • Burnaby refinery also known as Chevron gas buys the oil from Northern BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. The oil gets delivered through the Kinder Morgan pipeline and travels to the Vancouver heights location. There they turn the crude oil into gas, diesel and jet fuel. An interesting fact is that jet fuel is pumped from this location straight to the Vancouver International airport.
  • Almost 99 per cent of Canada's oil is exported to the USA. In 2015, 2.1 billion dollars worth of BC oil was bought by the USA. This business is good for our province. It makes us money.

Why is OIL important to my community?
It is the most important energy source in the world. We need it for transportation. Without it, we can't fly a plane or drive a car unless its electric. It's also non renewable so if we run out, we won't have any more. So now in B.C. They are trying to find other ways to get oil that they could not get at before because our existing oil fields will eventually dry out

This is the entrance to the
Burnaby refinery.
On Saturday Feb.4th I went to the location.

This is the route to the refinery. This was a place that we were
not allowed to go in.

OIL TANKS

THIS IS HOW THEY STORE THE OIL.THIS IS ONE OF MANY AT THE REFINERY

This is how they load the trucks.
This is the loading station. The oil goes in the pipes and out into the tanker trucks.

This is a closer picture of a tanker truck.

In this picture you will see a fire. That fire is called a flare stack. It is like the burner on a stove.
In an emergency It burns out all the dangerous chemicals instead of the gas going in our atmosphere.
