Oil companies hire geologists to

Companies will go in and test drill the locations.
If they find oil they, set up a rig to start pumping oil.

If crude oil is spilled while drilling or being shipped
and gets in the water supply it can harm
Alot of wild life or the environment around it.
If oil is burned, the exhaust causes air pollution.
