PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SPRING

  • Also known as ziigwan
  • They made canoes out of bark from birchbark trees
  • They made maple sugar from sap
  • They moved to where the maple trees grew what was also known as sugar camp

SUMMER

  • Also known as Niibin
  • They moved to the summer village sites
  • They played a popular game called lacrosse
  • The women planted and tended pumpkins,squash and potatoes
  • The men barely hunted in the summer so the animals could take care of their young

FALL

  • Also known as Dagwaagin
  • They find a place to live where there are ponds or lakes where wild rice grows
  • Wild rice was harvested while in canoes
  • The rice was dried and roasted over the fire
  • To grind the husks off the rice the men and children would step on the rice lightly

WINTER

  • Also known as Biboon
  • Every family group lives in their own cluster of wigwams
  • They lived very spread out because the food was scarce in the winter
  • The Men and boys often trapped small animals to help their families keep supplied
  • The women and girls cooked and made clothes
