PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE OJIBWE PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE SEASONS

SPRING OR ZIIGWAN

  • Traveled to maple trees to gather sap
  • Sugar camp
  • Repaired lodges and made new ones
  • Made canoes

SUMMER OR NIIBIN

  • Village sites near rivers and lakes
  • Ceremonial feasts and dances and lacrosse
  • Trading
  • Crops (corn, pumpkin, squash, and potatoes)
  • Fruits in forest (strawberries, juneberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, etc.)

FALL OR DAGWAAGIN

  • Ponds, marshes, and lakes with wild rice
  • Harvested wild rice in canoes
  • Prepared wild rice eat and save for winter
  • Children harvested berries while adults hunted game and fish
  • Men hunted ducks and geese and men and women caught fish and preserved them for winter

WINTER OR BIBOON

  • Family groups lived in their own cluster of wigwans in the pine forests, far apart from their neighbors
  • Best hunters hunted large animals such as moose, deer, and elk
  • Children and older men hunted and trapped smaller animals
  • Women made fishing nets and hunting bags
  • Made jackets and other clothes
