His Life

  • Equiano was a man of African descent. He was born in 1765.
  • His place of origin was West Africa, now known as Algeria.
  • He was part of a large tribe and lived a happy life.
  • He was also well educated

Into Slavery

By the age of 11, Equiano and his sister were kidnapped.

Separation

  • Equiano was first split from his sister at the time of his kidnapping.
  • He met with her again and slept by her side.
  • The next morning, she was gone once again.
  • Equiano was never reunited with his sister again.

His Captors

  • While in West Africa, he was treated well by his captors.
  • He was sold to a wealthy widow and her son who treated him kindly.
  • His poor treatment began when he was put on slave ship.

The Slave Ship

  • The conditions were horrible.
  • He was severely beaten for not eating.
  • Some men tried to throw themselves overboard.
  • He still managed to find beauty in the ocean.

Freedom

  • Equiano bought his freedom after working for his new master.
  • He wrote an autobiography of his life and struggles.
  • It became a best-seller.

  • Equiano was carried by his first captors back in Africa when he tired.

  • Equiano wrote about the beauty of the ocean despite his hardships.
