MYTHS ABOUT OLD FAITHFUL

  • Old Faithful erupts every hour.
  • Old Faithful is slowing down.
  • Old Faithful is getting shorter.
1. Fact
This legend has been told since the beginning of it's history, but Old Faithful is just as likely to erupt every 20 or 70 minutes after the hour as it would be every hour on the hour.

2. People believe that because they have to wait longer than an hour to see an eruption that Old Faithful must be slowing down. This is false. The time intervals between eruptions have always been between 35 and 120 minutes.

3. Old Faithful is still as tall as it has ever been. It stands between 90 and 180 feet. People come to the conclusion that it has gotten smaller because of a previous eruption that was taller.
