THE FOUNDERS AND THE PROMISE

  • The religion of the Israelites started with Abraham
  • God promised Abraham the "Promised Land"
  • Abraham, his son Isaac, and his grandson Jacob are the founders of the Jewish faith.

THE EXODUS OF THE ISRAELITES AND THE COVENANT

  • Moses goes back to his birthplace, Egypt, to free the enslaved Israelites
  • After he freed the Israelites God gave him the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai
  • Moses's followers wandered the desert for forty years to learn God's trust

Taking Over the Promised Land

  • Joshua led the Israelites in the Promised land
  • They had to fight to survive
  • Judges were the military leaders in times of crisis
  • The Israelites abandoned their nomadic ways

The Nation and the Temple

  • David was the second king of Israel and united the three nations
  • David made Jerusalem the capital city
  • Solomon, David's son, built a wonderful temple in Jerusalem
  • Jerusalem became a great and holy city

THE KINGS AND THE PROPHETS

  • After Solomon's death, Israel divided
  • The north kingdom, Israel, fell to the Assyrians
  • The south kingdom, Judah, fell to the Babylonians
  • Before the kingdoms fell, prophets told them what they did wrong
  • Prophets were there to keep the people to the plan God made

The Babylonian Exile and the Jewish Dispersion

  • During the exile, prophets still encouraged people to repent their sins
  • When Persia conquered Babylon, the Jews were allowed to go back to their land
  • The Jews rebuilt their temple and Jerusalem
  • During the exile Jewish leaders collected writings from their past and turning them into books
  • These books became part of the Old Testament

More Oppressors

  • In 330 BC, Alexander the Great and the Greek Empire conquered Persia
  • For 300 years the Greeks ruled the Jews
  • After the Greeks, the Romans took over to the time of and after Jesus.
