WHAT IS AN OLIGARCHY GOVERNMENT?

  • Any system of government in which a small group holds power
  • Derives power from wealth, military power,& social position
  • Like dictatorship, oligarchies usually surpress all political opposition
  • A small elite group
Oligarchy comes from the Greek word (olígos), meaning "few", and (arkho), meaning "to rule or to command".

Oligarchy means the rule of the few, and those few are generally the people who are richer and more powerful than the others, what you might call the aristocrats or the nobles.
Oligarchies were not as common as monarchies in the ancient world. Right after the Dark Ages, most of the city-states in Greece were oligarchies.
China and Russia during there communism years where considered an oligarchy.

Roles of Citizens

  • You cannot vote
  • You have no say in the government structure
  • There is no constitution or charter

This quote explains a lot of the oligarchy government because it's explaining how the cruel ways of a government is not as dangerous to the citizens as the lack of interest or enthusiasm as in a democracy.
