OLT Update

3/13/15

Dear Mark, Greg, and Drew,

I am writing to thank you once more for the support all of you have given me since my presentation at the Cyberinfrastructure Conference. I must say, this is the first time since my tenure at the UI I have felt this campus is behind me and making it easier for me to accomplish my work.

I have been working closely with Neil Feuerhelm and Randy Cetin on getting all my video and audio research data onto Kaltura. Neil is very willing to think outside the box, which helps us figure out how to use Kaltura in new ways. We now have all the video data organized by years. We are currently in the process of getting the audio data digitized and will later move them to Kaltura. Neil and I will experiment with how to keep both the video and audio data together in a way that is manageable and that makes sense for data analysis. Although I cataloged several years of the audio and video data, the disks they were stored on became outdated and the information is no longer retrievable.

Randy Cetin, Neil and I have been in conversation with the preservation office and they are attempting to retrieve the information. If we are not successful, I will need to have a student retype the information using the hardcopy. The catalog must be an editable computer file for it to be of use. The goal eventually will be to see if there is a way to match the catalog information to the existing information in Kaltura making it truly easier for me to manage this large data set.

In short, this was a huge project that I could have never undertaken on my own. I had almost given up that I would ever be able to use the data I worked so hard to collect. This kind of data is very difficult to collect and I am one of the few researchers who have it. It was quite frustrating to know I have a gold mine and yet not be able to access it. All of this has changed because of all your efforts. My goal this summer is to go through the data and to write a book proposal.

I know we are not done with this project, but I wanted to give you an update on where we are and the impact this is having on my work on campus.

With sincere gratitude,
Eurydice

Hi Mark:

I just wanted to thank you for empowering Joe and Nick to explore the social media monitoring solution. They presented to about 40 chief communications officers from across campus, and to say they were a big hit is an understatement.

Everyone is really excited, and folks are eager to participate.

Way to add value!!!

You guys rock.
