THE OLYMPIANS

Zeus

  • Roman Name: Jupiter
  • God of the gods. God of the sky and rain
  • Zeus' most powerful weapon was his lightning/thunder bolt.
  • Son of Cronus and Rhea. Siblings were most notably Hades, Poseidon, and Hera
  • His wife was his sister Hera.

HERA

  • Roman Name: Juno
  • Goddess of marriage and childbirth. Queen of the gods
  • Her animals were the cow and peacock. Her city was Argos
  • Daughter of Cronus and Rhea. Sister of Zeus, Posiden, and Hades
  • Married Zeus after he raped her.

Poseidon

  • Roman Name: Neptune
  • God of the Sea
  • His symbols are his Trident and horses. Poseidon was very greedy
  • Son of Cronus and Rhea. Brother of Hades, Zeus, and Hera
  • Married to Amphitrite

Demeter

  • Roman Name: Ceres
  • Goddess of many things, including the harvest, earth, agriculture and fertility in general
  • She makes crops grow each year, and the first load of bread is in honor of her. Symbol of the harvest
  • Daughter of Cronus and Rhea
  • Demeter never married

Apollo

  • Roman Name: Apollo
  • Apollo is the god of music, light, truth, and the sun.
  • Apollo is ofter associated with a golden lyre, a silver bow, medecine, and the sun
  • Son of Zeus and Leto. He had a twin sister, Artemis.
  • Apollo had many lovers, but was never married

ARTEMIS

  • Roman Name: Diana
  • Goddess of chastity, virginity, the hunt, the moon, and the natural environment
  • She was associated with wild things, especially deer, huntsmen, child birth, and her tree was the cypress
  • Daughter of Zeus and Leto. Had a twin brother, Apollo
  • Artemis was not married

APHRODITE

  • Roman Name: Venus
  • Goddess of love, desire, and beauty
  • Her main symbol was her very powerful magical girdle
  • There are two sets of possible parents for her. One was Zeus and Dione. The other was Uranus and the sea
  • Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus

ARES

  • Roman Name: Mars
  • God of war
  • Ares was associated with murder and bloodstain, and adultery. His bird was the vulture, and his animal was the dog
  • Son of Zeus and Hera
  • Ares was married to Hephaestus for a time.

Athena

  • Roman Name: Minerva
  • Goddess of reasion, intelligence, arts and literature
  • Athena was a virgin. She sprang from Zeus' head this is why she is so smart. Invented many agricultural things
  • Daughter of Zeus and Metis
  • Athena never married

DIONYSUS

  • Roman Name: Bacchus
  • God of fertility, wine, and later on arts
  • Dionysus was associated with wine, the art of tending grapes, and people of the theater
  • Son of Zeus and Shemale. Only god with a mortal mother
  • He was married to Ariadne

Hephaestus

  • Roman Name: Vulcan
  • God of fire and the forge. The smith god
  • Hephaestus was the only ugly god, he was also lame. Uses volcanos to forge
  • Son of Zeus and Hera
  • Married to Aphrodite

Hermes

  • Roman Name: Mercury
  • God of thieves and commerce. Messenger of the gods.
  • He was the fastest god. He had a winged hat and sandals. Hermes had a magic wand, and invented many things
  • Son of Zeus and Maia
  • Hermes did not have a wife for many interactions with various women

Hades

  • Roman Name: Pluto
  • God of the underworld, and the dead. Also the god of wealth
  • Hades was not death but he was the god of death. Hades lived in the underworld and was greedy
  • Son of Cornus and Rhea. Brother of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hera
  • Married to Persephone. Hades may not be an Olympian to some because he rarely came up from the underworld
