  • Oncology is the study of abnormal masses or tumors in the body.

WHAT ITS ABOUT

  • Oncology's main purpose is to study neoplasms in the body
  • A neoplasm is an abnormal growth of new tissue that can be classified as malignant or benign
  • The Greek root word "neo" means new and the suffix "plasm" means "forming cells"

MALIGNANT AND BENIGN

  • A malignant neoplasm is composed of cells that are invasive and spread to remote regions of the body. "Cancerous"
  • A benign neoplasm is a growth that is composed of the same type of cells of the tissue it is growing upon. "Non-cancerous"

  • Metastasis happens when malignant neoplasms enter the blood and lymph vessels.
