OPERATIONS ON RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

Is a ratio of two polynomials provided that the denominator is not equal to zero.

RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

  • MULTIPLICATION
  • DIVISION
  • ADDITION
  • SUBTRACTION

How to multiply algebraic expressions?

  • Factor all numerators and denominators
  • Cancel all common factors
  • Either multiply the denominators and numerators together or leave the solution in factored form
  • Simplify.

HOW TO DIVIDE ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS?

  • Leave first the fraction as it is
  • Find the reciprocal or flip the second fraction
  • Change the division problem into multiplication problem
  • Simplify.
Let’s start with multiplication. Remember that to multiply two fractions together, you simply multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together. You should also remember that if you can simplify each fraction (cross-cancel) before multiplying, you should

HOW TO ADD & SUBTRACT ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION?

  • Addition and subtraction of fractions involves having a common denominator. If the fractions already have the same denominator, you just add the numerators and keep the denominator the same. If the fractions do not have the same denominator, you have to find the least common denominator and create equivalent fractions before adding or subtracting.
