  • When railroads came to the state citrus fruits became a major industry
  • Spanish explorers brought oranges to Florida
  • Juan ponce de Leon may have planted oranges in St. Augustine in the 1500's

  • Railroads were expanding ,so the fruit could now travel to markets and places that sell goods
  • In 1893 Florida was producing 5million boxes of citrus a year which is a long time

  • Birds and animals help orange trees grow because they spread the seeds around.
  • Florida's oranges were growing wildly in the 1800's
  • The place were most orange trees grow is in Florida's forest

WHAT HELPS AN ORANGE TREE GROW?

  • Trees grow well in sandy soil it is kind of important for trees to be in sandy soil because it is good for there roots
  • Trees also need warm climate to help it grow well like the sun.
  • Trees need sandy soil and warm climate to grow well and healthy.
  • If you plant your orange tree in Florida and close to the beach you should have a beautiful healthy tree

ORANGE FEVER

  • In the 1870's orange fever hit Florida
  • People realized that they could make more money off oranges
  • Because people did that more people bought land
  • Since they bought land they planted more orange trees
