ORBITAL FRACTURES

WHATS AN ORBITAL FRACTURE?

  • caused by high- speed blunt force to the globe
  • portion of the globe may extrude into the nasal sinus
  • globe can be displaced posteriorly.

PROCEDURE

  • ORIF
  • reduce a fracture of the orbital floor
  • prevent entrapment of the extraocular muscles
  • support the orbital contents

TECHNIQUE

  • subciliary or a transconjunctival incision is made
  • the orbit is exposed
  • fractures are reduced and repaired
  • Incision is closed

PREP AND DRAPE

  • patient is positioned and prepped as for a facial fracture.
  • ophthalmic ointment may be placed in the eyes before the skin prep.

INSTRUMENTS

  • corneal protectors
  • # 15 blade
  • brain spatula retractors
  • freer elevator
  • orbital floor plate
