Coffee:
Brewed from coffee beans. Can be served hot or iced, caffeinated or decaffeinated.

Most people know what coffee is. There are a few ways you can order it, though. Check with your server/barista to see what roasts or blends they have available.

Coffee can be brewed in many ways, one of which is in a French Press. This leads to fresher coffee and a richer mouth-feel.

Some coffee shops have French Presses available. The coffee is ground more coarsely, steeped in hot water, then pressed through a fine mesh. This allows more of the oils in the coffee to remain present.

Cafe Au Lait

Coffee with milk
A cafe au lait is simply coffee with milk. It is a good option if you like less strong coffee. If you want your coffee milky but warm, you can order a cafe au lait and have the milk steamed.

Macchiato

Espresso with a spot of milk foam
Unlike the "Caramel Macchiato" at Starbucks, a traditional macchiato is simply coffee with a spot of milk. Most coffee shops with serve their macchiatos as a shot of espresso with a dot of milk foam on top.

Cappuccino

1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 milk foam
One of the important features of a cappuccino is the fine milk foam on top. This foam is produced when the barista steams the milk and makes tiny bubbles.

Latte

Espresso with milk
A latte is a good go-to. It's made with espresso and milk. It can be steamed or served over ice. It can be made as a skinny latte (with skim milk) or as a breve latte (with half and half). You can add sugar or flavors, or you can drink it plain. You can get extra shots of espresso if you want it stronger.

Milk Preference:
You can request a specific kind of milk in your drink. Your choices will typically include skim milk (skinny), whole milk, half and half (breve), and soy milk.

Don't be afraid to ask for a specific ingredient. A lot of coffee shops now offer almond or coconut milk too!

There are lots of ways to enjoy your coffee. Most drinks can be hot or iced. Some of them can even be frozen like a frappe or frappuccino.

If you barista knows what they're doing, they can make your beverage hot, iced, or blended.

You can add sweetened, flavored syrups to make things more interesting! Some common choices are vanilla, caramel, and chocolate.

Most places have their flavors listed somewhere. If not, be sure to ask.

Popular combinations

  • Caramel Mocha: chocolate and caramel
  • Peppermint Mocha: chocolate and peppermint
  • Almondjoy: chocolate, almond, and coconut
  • Nutella: chocolate and hazelnut
  • Raspberry and White Chocolate
  • Chocolate and Cherry
  • If it sounds good in a cupcake or a cocktail, it'd probably be a good combo.
If it sounds good in a cupcake or a sweet cocktail, it'd probably make a good coffee flavor combination. Try something new!

Coffee without coffee!
If you want a hot drink with no coffee, you can order a steamer! It's like hot chocolate with whatever flavor you want.

This is a great option for people who have kids. You can get your kid a cherry or vanilla steamer and they can enjoy a hot beverage without the caffeine!
