INSECT ORDERS

LEPIDOPTERA

  • Body and wings covered in over lapping scales
  • Hind wings are fan-shaped front are large
  • Name means scale wing
  • Life cycle is egg,larva,pupa,and adult
  • Examples: butterfly and moth

COLEOPTERA

  • Commonly called beetles
  • Name stands for sheathed wing
  • Has 2 pairs of wings, 1 pair is large and protects hind wings
  • Has a hard,dense exoskeleton
  • Examples:ground beetle,scarab beetle,click beetle

HEMIPTERA

  • Name stands for half wing
  • Part of the first pair of wings is toughened other half is softer
  • Have modified piercing and sucking mouthparts
  • Doesn't go through metamorphosis
  • Examples:stink bugs,leafhoppers,milkweed bugs

ORTHOPTERA

  • Name stands for straight wing
  • Long hind legs made for jumping
  • Large descending lobes on sides forewings are hard,leathery
  • Forewings spread in flight and cover hind wings at rest
  • Examples:crickets,katydids,grasshoppers

BLATTODEA

  • Commonly known as cockroaches
  • Usually dark brown or reddish color
  • Flattened oval bodies
  • Long,swept back antennas
  • Examples:smoky brown cockroach,Asian roach, Florida woods roach

ODONATA

  • Known as dragonflies and damselflies
  • Name stands for toothed ones
  • Lacks ability to fold wings over back
  • Has lower lip mask to catch prey
  • Examples:dragon flies and damselflies

HYMENOPTERA

  • Commonly known as ants,bees,wasps,sawflies
  • Name Stands for membrane wing
  • Two pairs of wings except ants are wingless
  • Has complete metamorphosis
  • Examples:ants,bees,wasps

DIPTERA

  • Commonly known as fly
  • Name stands for two winged
  • Modified hing wings
  • Two wings and two halteres
  • Examples:crane fly,robber fly,fruit fly
