PORTLAND

  • Portland is called Rip City because The nickname came from a NBA team called the Portland Trail Blazers
  • Portland was named by the flip of a coin. If it had landed on the other side, Portland would be known as Boston, Oregon.
  • With over 700 food carts throughout the city, Portland has been named the best city in the world for street food by several publications

OREGON ZOO

  • The 64-acre Oregon Zoo is located in Portland, a city and surrounding metropolitan area of 2.26 million people. Attendance in 2011 exceeded 1.6 million.
  • Each year it contributes between $4 and $5 million to help fund the zoo's work in conservation, education and animal welfare.
  • The zoo has five major exhibit areas: Great Northwest, Fragile Forests, Asia, Pacific Shores and Africa. Within these large areas are 23 specialized exhibits.

MOUNT HOOD

  • Mount Hood, called Wy'east by the now-extinct Multnomah tribe, is a stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of northern Oregon.
  • Mt Hood 75 km ESE of Portland is Oregon's highest peak and one of the most prominent of the Cascades volcanoes
  • It is probably the only volcano in Oregon which has erupted in historic times (last confirmed activity in 1865-66).

OREGON TRAIL

  • The Oregon Trail is a 2,200-mile historic east-west large wheeled wagon route and emigrant trail that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon. W
  • During eight decades in the 1800s the Oregon Trail served as a natural corridor as the United States moved from the eastern half of the continent toward the west coast
  • The Oregon Trail ran approximately 2,000 miles west from Missouri toward the Rocky Mountains to the Willamette Valley. A trail to California branched off in southern Idaho. The Mormon Trail paralleled much of the Oregon Trail, connecting Council Bluffs to Salt Lake City
