• Mitochondria is a rod shaped structure in plant and animal cells
• It's a double membrane bound organelle
• Has a inner and outer membrane
• The membranes are made up of lipids and proteins

• The most important function is to produce energy
• Helps cells maintain the right concentration of calcium ions
• Helps build parts of blood and hormones

DISCOVERY

• Richard Altmann discovered the mitochondria in 1886
• Karl Benda named it
