ORGANELLES

BY HANNAH BUNCH

PEROXISOME

  • Detoxifies drugs
  • Breaks down fatty acids

LYSOSOME

  • Suicide sac
  • Intracellular digestion

NUCLEUS

  • Brain of the cell
  • Storage of genetic information

CELL MEMBRANE

  • Maintains the integrity of the cell
  • Cell border

MITOCHONDRIA

  • Produce energy
  • Cellular respiration

GOLGI APPARATUS

  • Packages protein
  • Distributes molecules

SMOOTH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

  • Makes lipids
  • Steroid synthesis

ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RERICULUM

  • Makes protein
  • Found in cytoplasm

RIBOSOME

  • Makes proteins
  • Free in cytoplasm or in groups

VACUOLE

  • Transports water
  • Within plant cells there is one central vacuole

VESICLE

  • Transports anything but water
  • Storage and transports substance into/out of cell

MICROTUBULE

  • Backbone of flagella
  • Adjacent to the nucleus

MICROFILAMENTS

  • Part of cytoskeleton
  • Helps structure of cell

NUCLEAR MEMBRANE

  • Maintains the integrity of the cell
  • Made of two lipid bilayers

CHROMATIN

  • Contains DNA
  • Also contains RNA and protein

CENTRIOLE

  • Forms spindles
  • 95% of the time does nothing

FLAGELLA

  • Propels sperm
  • Movement by cell

CILIA

  • Sweeps mucus
  • Movement of substance inside a tube

NUCLEOLUS

  • Makes ribosomes
  • Contains ribosomal information
