Organic Compounds

Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins and Nucleic Acids

Carbohydrates

  • Main source of energy
  • Monomer: Monosaccharides
  • Sugars make up carbohydrates
  • They make up cell walls in plants
  • Examples: Pasta, bread, beans

Lipids

  • Store energy, insulate to maintain body temperature, protect, act as steroids
  • Made up of Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen
  • Monomer: fatty acids and glycerol
  • Examples: fats, oils, waxes

Proteins

  • Monomer: amino acids
  • Made up of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Sulfur
  • Help cells keep their shape, makes up muscles, speeds up chemical reactions
  • Examples: enzymes, antibodies

Nucleic Acids

  • Examples: DNA and RNA
  • Monomers: nucleotide monomers
  • Made up of Carbon, Hydrogen,Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorus
