Brief history of MCTC

  • The precursor to MCTC was found on December 14, 1914 as the Girls’ Vocational School by Elizabeth Fish
  • In 1996, as part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system, this vocational school was merged with an open-enrollment community college (established in 1965) to form MCTC.
  • Currently offers more than 150 associate’s degrees, diplomas and certificate
  • Top majors include Liberal Arts Business Management Information Technology Human Services Education and Child Development (MCTC,2015)

  • University and its library culture centered around providing the best education possible to its students. Currently the library has a more flat structure with bubbles of responsibility. These include: Research help, access help & student workers, instruction, collections, technical services, systems, administration, and social media. Strong emphasis on cooperation and collaboration. Have a Mindset Meetup group that spends a semester discussing a particular topic related to the library and its instruction. This semester they are discussing implicit bias University and its library culture centered around providing the best education possible to its students. evolution of organization to maintain relevance

  • In past ran traditional library instruction in the form of one shot library use and bibliographic instruction sessions
  • Roughly ten years ago realized importance of information literacy and decided to revamp instruction
  • Developed their Information Literacy and Research Skills course with support of broader college administration.
  • Once it had proven successful, became requirement for most MCTC students (nursing exempt) and librarians are now faculty.
