PRESENTATION OUTLINE

OSGOOD-SCHLATTER DIESEASE

ALEXA HOWARD

WHAT IS OSGOOD-SCHLATTER DISEASE?

  • It is an inflammation of the area just below the knee where the tendon from the kneecap (patellar tendon) attaches to the shinbone (tibia).
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease is always characterized by activity-related pain that occurs a few inches below the knee.
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease is probably the most frequent cause of knee pain in children.
  • It usually occurs in boys from 12-14 and girls ages 10-13.

BODY SYSTEM AFFECTED

  • Osgood-Schlatter Disease affects the skeletal system.
  • It mostly affects a few inches below the knee, which is where osgood-schlatter disease occurs.

SYMPTOMS

  • Limping
  • Painful bump below the knee
  • Knee pain
  • Leg pain
  • Knee swelling
  • increased warmth under the knee and over the shinbone
  • Tenderness below the knee

CAUSES

  • Activities that involve running, jumping, twisting, and bending.
  • Sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, running, figure skating, and ballet.
  • This repeated stress of the tendon pulling on the growth plate that inserts on the shinbone.

DIAGNOSIS

  • During a physical exam the knee will have tenderness, swelling, pain, and redness.
  • X-rays May also show inflammation at the insertion of the tendon to the tibia.

TREATMENT

  • A method of treatment for osgood-schlatter disease is called “RICE”.
  • “RICE” stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevate.
  • Also when the growth plates stop growing the disease will resolve.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen may reduce inflammation. (Also Tylenol may help.)

TREATMENT

  • Physical therapy that helps to stretch the quadriceps can reduce tension on the insertion of the tendon on the shinbone.
  • In very rare cases surgery may be necessary.

PROGNOSIS

  • In over 90% Of cases it is excellent with nonoperative management.
  • Surgery is also successful when needed.
  • Generally Osgood-Schlatter disease is self limiting.

DISEASE PREVENTION

  • Regular Stretching of the quadriceps and hamstrings.
  • Iliotibial band which helps put pressure on the tendon insertion.
