HIS IMPACT ON SOCIETY

  • Oskar bought three factories for economic opportunity in 1939
  • At Emalia, his factory in Krakow, he hired hundreds of Jews from the nearby Kraków Ghetto, letting them sleep at the factories to save them from being sent to camps
  • The factory was making big profits by making supplies for the German army

OSKAR'S IMPACT

  • Oskar decided to take good care of the Jews because of the recent oppression in Europe
  • Many of his workers were sent to concentration camps, but Oskar persuaded the Nazis to let 1,100 Jews work for him, saving them from death

OSKAR'S REMEMBERANCE

  • Oskar was persistent because he was arrested three times under suspicion , but was never charged, because they didn't have evidence
  • In result of Oskar’s contributions he received the “Righteous Among the Nations”* award in 1962 and the “Holocaust Memorial Museum Medal of Remembrance” ** in 1993, after he had passed away.
  • Oskar was an unspoken hero when he died, because he didn't have much money and not many people knew him after the war had ended
  • * “Righteous Among the Nations” - Awarded to non-Jews by Israel's Holocaust Memorial, Yad Vashem, for their brave assistance to help Jews ** “Holocaust Memorial Museum Medal of Remembrance” - An extremely rare medal given to the people who did heroic acts during the Holocaust

OSKAR'S EARLY LIFE

  • Oskar Schindler was a war profiteer, womanizer, and Nazi Party member with a huge ego and a playboy personality.
  • He had two older siblings, a brother and a sister who he had the privilege of going to school with.

EARLY LIFE TIMELINE

  • 1908, April 28 - He was born in what is known today as the Czech Republic.
  • 1924 - Oskar left school and started to do random jobs including working for his dad.
  • 1928 - Oskar married Emilie Pelzl and was eventually called into the military.
  • 1930's - His fathers business failed due to the economic depression.

OSKAR AND THE NAZI PARTY

  • He first worked with the office of the Military Foreign intelligence five months after the Germans invaded Poland in which after he joined the Nazi Party
  • After he joined he then saved 1000 Jewish people to work for him.
  • The people he saved came from Auschwitz
  • In October of 1944 the SS moved the Emalia Jews to Plaszow, Schindler relocated to reopen and make armaments.

  • For the Jews that got to go to the new factory was named Schindler's List which had over 1200 Jews.
  • But before people could work there he had to meet special requirements by the SS to make Brünnlitz a concentration camp
