OSTEOSARCOMA

INTRO

  • Osteosarcoma is cancer of the bone
  • Osteosarcoma can develop in any bone
  • It develops most commonly in the proximal tibia and distal femur
  • Arises most commonly from the wider part of the bone called metaphysis
  • It is the most common bone cancer found in children and adolescents

SYMPTOMS

  • Pain, swelling, and decreased joint motion
  • Tenderness and redness where the tumor is
  • Limited movement
  • Limping, if it's in the leg
  • Pain lifting if it's the arms

DIAGNOSIS

  • Blood tests
  • X-rays
  • Radionuclide Bone Scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Computerized Tomography Scan (CT Scan)

TREATMENT

  • Osteosarcoma is treated with surgery and chemotherapy
  • In years past they would amputate the extremity where the
  • Tumor was found.
  • Surgical removal of gross and microscopic tumor
  • Is required to prevent reoccurrence

POSSIBLE CAUSES

  • Genetic changes can cause immature bone cells
  • To become tumor cells instead of healthy bones
  • Rb gene is a suppressor cell that controls growth of cells
  • When mutated it no longer controls cell growth and tumor can form

PREVENTION

  • There are no preventions
  • No immunities either

HISTORY

  • The history of osteosarcoma is sketchy
  • No one knows for certain when it started
  • 1932-One of the oldest case was found in a
  • Prehistoric relative of man
