OTTOMAN POLITICAL

TYPE OF GOVERNMENT

  • Sultan was the supreme monarch
  • They had a bureaucracy
  • Divan were advisors and ministers gathered around a council
  • Grand Vizier was appointed to assume certain Sultan responsibilities
  • Turk Revolution of 1908 was when the Ottoman state became a constitutional monarchy

GOVERNMENT TYPE CONT.

  • Before the reforms of the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire was very simple
  • They only had 2 main dimensions, the military and civil administrations
  • The Imperial Harem was home to the Sultan's concubines
  • This helped insure that the Sultan got a male heir to the throne
  • The concubines also had a large political influence on him, his favorites had a lot of influence on him

MILITARY

  • Captured Austrian capital Vienna became scourge of Christian Europe and threatened southern Italy
  • Turkic cavalry became a warrior aristocracy
  • janissaries- young boys captured
  • -janissaries tried to translate military service into political influence
  • -often times the death of a sultan left warring between the sons
