jupiter

  • fun fact: Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System, with 2.5 times the mass of all the other planets combined.
  • in my own words: biggest planet

uranus

  • fun fact: Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. While being visible to the naked eye, it was not recognised as a planet due to its dimness and slow orbit. Uranus became the first planet discovered with the use of a telescope. Uranus is tipped over on its side with an axial tilt of 98 degrees.
  • in my own words: first planet to be discovered with telescope

neptune

  • fun fact: It takes Neptune 164.8 Earth years to orbit the Sun.
  • in my own words: takes long time to orbit sun

saturn

  • fun fact: Saturn is the second largest planet and is best known for its fabulous ring system that was first observed in 1610 by the astronomer Galileo Galilei. Like Jupiter, Saturn is a gas giant and is composed of similar gasses including hydrogen, helium and methane
  • in my own words: known for ring system

comet

  • fun fact: Sometimes comets are referred to as “dirty snowballs” or “cosmic snowballs”
  • in my own words: it has other names

kuiper belt

  • fun fact: It contains small solar system bodies made mostly of ices. The ices are frozen volatiles (gases) such as methane, ammonia, nitrogen and water. It also is home to the known dwarf planets Pluto, Haumea and Makemake.
  • in my own words: home to dwarf planets

dwarf planet

  • fun fact: Dwarf Planet Facts. There are 5 officially recognised dwarf planets in our solar system, they are Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris. With the exception of Ceres, which is located in the asteroid belt, the other dwarf planets are found in the outer solar system.
  • in my own words: there are 5 recognized dwarf planets
