OWLS

WHY ARE OWLS NOCTURNAL?

  • Owls are nocturnal because they are active at night

OWLS ARE HUNTING EXPERTS

  • They have really soft feathers so they're nearly silent flyers
  • They have 3x as many rods in their eyes so they have excellent eye sight
  • They hacve binaural hearing
  • The featehrs that go all the way down their legs help them so that their legs don't cut up
  • They have four sharp long talons that help them grap onto prey

  • Gives owls the best night vision of all animals

WHY DO THEIR EYES REMAIN FIXED IN THER HEADS?

  • There are too many rods packed into the eyes, no room for muscles
  • To make up for this, the owl can rotate its head

CONES?

  • Owl eyes have no cones so they see in black and white.

EARS

  • The feather arrangement of the facial disk gather sound waves
  • It then directs the noise to the eardrum within the skull

CLAWS?

OWL CLAWS ARE CALLED TALONS

FEATHERS OR ARMOR?

THE FEATHERS ON AN OWLS LEG PREVENT THEM FROM BEING INJURED BY PREY

FEATHERS

THE FRINGED FEATHERS ON AN OWL HELP IT FLY ALMOST SILENTLY

OWLETS

  • It takes owlets 3 weeks to swallow their prey whole

AN OWL WHAT?

  • An owl pellet is a clump of undigestible materials that the owl regurgitates

BARN OWLS EAT WHAT?

BARN OWLS PRIMARILY FEED ON RODENTS AND OTHER SMALL MAMMALS

OWL EGGS

  • Owls don't lay their eggs all at once to relieve some stress off the parents

OWLETS

  • The parents use up a lot of their food sources by feeding owlets
  • The owlets will deplete more of the food sources if they continue to live there

BARN OWLS LIVE FOR HOW LONG?

BARN OWLS CAN LIVE UP TO 20 YEARS
