FEATURES OF OWLS

  • Their feathers are fluffy and quite
  • Their ears are at different levels giving them 3D hearing
  • Feathers on legs to protect them from prey

Because owls have big eyes every bit of light enters their eyes so that they can see better at night.

Owls eyes are fixed in their head because they have so many rods in their heads. To compensate for their eyes their heads move 270 degrees

Owls don't have cones in their eyes so they see in black and white.

Owls have binaural hearing. So they can tell how far something is off the ground just by hearing it.

The owls claws are called talons.

The owls have feathers all the way down their legs to protect them from the prey that they have captured so that the prey can't bite and scratch them.

The owls are silent when they fly because their wings are fringed.

Owls can swallow their prey whole by the age of 3 weeks.

An owl pallet is the parts of the food the owl eats that it can't digest and it throws back up.

Barn owls primarily feed on voles, rats, shrews and birds.

Owls don't lay all their eggs at once so that the food source doesn't decrease all at once.

The baby owls need to leave as soon as possible so that the food source isn't depleted all at once.

Barn owls can live up to 20 years in a good environment. They usually die soon in the wild.
