PRESENTATION OUTLINE

OZONE DEPLETION

BY: SCOTTIE AND ALEXIS

DESCRIPTION

  • Two events usually referred to About 4% depletion per decade of stratosphere
  • The most pronounced is in lower stratosphere
  • Or springtime depletion over the polar regions

CAUSES

  • Caused by ozone-depleting substances (ODS)
  • Main ones are chlorine and bromine
  • Chemicals environmentally friendly in lower atmosphere
  • Released by uv rays from compounds in stratosphere
  • One chlorine can break apart 1000's of ozone molecules

EFFECTS OF THE BIOSHERE

  • Aquatic: Harm on phytoplankton and larvae from UVA are of particular concern.
  • Plankton play an important role in the food chain.
  • Crops: Ozone depletion damages crops, aquatic organisms and increases ground-level smog,
  • Humans: Higher UVA also effects humans. skin cancer, cataracts, and declining of the human immune system
  • Certain types of fish lay eggs weak to uv

HOW CAN WE PREVENT THIS

  • Not using chemicals like CFC.
  • Lowering CO2 emissions
  • Driving less
  • Keeping your house thermostat consistent
  • Reducing the use of aerosols.
