The ozone layer is a colorless, unstable, toxic gas, with a pungent odor and powerful oxidizing properties, formed from oxygen by electrical discharges or ultraviolet lights.
The chemical make up balance of the ozone layer is O3.
There is so much oxygen in our atmosphere, that these high-energy ultraviolet rays are completely absorbed in the stratosphere. When an ozone molecule absorbs even low energy ultraviolet radiation, it splits onto an ordinary oxygen molecule and a free oxygen atom.
WHAT PRODUCTS HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE OZONE LAYER?
Nonessential products include all aerosol products, pressurized dispensers, and foam products containing, or manufactured with, chlorofluorocarbons. CFC’s drift into the upper atmosphere where their chlorine components destroy ozone. CFC’s are thought to be a major cause of the ozone hole over Antarctica.
