HOW IT WORKS

• A mortar is a weapon that fires explosive projectiles known as mortar bombs at low velocities, short ranges, and high-arcing ballistic trajectories.

EFFECTIVE?

• Mortars are also highly effective when used from concealed positions, such as the natural escarpments on hillsides.

ARE THEY USED TODAY

• I'm in Iraq and the insurgents use mortars pretty frequently. Often to drop rounds into the Green Zone. I've been a couple of blocks from the launching and it is a low whump, not real loud. ~ (current marine)
